Top 3 Quick Income-Generating Activities

You’ve probably heard me say a number of times that entrepreneurs need to master their time in order to have a profitable and
sustainable business.  And you’ve probably heard a thousand times that you need to be working on income-generating activities.

And it’s true.

As an entrepreneur, if you want your business to survive you have to spend the majority of your time on activities that are going to generate a profit.

It sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?  But still so many entrepreneurs struggle with what to do on a daily basis in order to bring in the dough.

Everyone knows that working with clients brings in money.  Everyone knows that selling products brings in money.  However, many business owners are
at a loss when it comes to figuring out what to do in order to bring in more clients and sell more products.

So I’m sharing with you my top 3 quick income-generating activities to focus on each day.

  • Speaking. One of the best ways to get people to say “yes” to whatever it is you’re offering is to speak to them about it.  You’re probably thinking, “duh” but you’d be surprised at how few entrepreneurs regularly seek out speaking engagements.  Figure out which organizations your ideal clients belong to and then contact those organizations to see if they’d be interested in booking you. Don’t forget to contact other business owners with a similar target
market, as well.  Quick Challenge:  Find 10 people and/or organizations to contact about booking a speaking engagement.
  • Follow-up. Most entrepreneurs are horrible at following up and they miss a lot of opportunities to grow their business because of it.  If you
want to build your business, you have to build relationships, and you don’t build relationships with only one contact. Follow up with people you meet at networking events, from speaking engagements, on your email list, through social media, etc.  Don’t leave follow up as an “after thought.” Create a system for following up with people with the intention of building a relationship and being of service.  Remember, you’re not stalking them and aggressively trying to sell your services.  Quick Income Challenge: Follow up with 10 people this week and give them something of value.
  • Invite people to talk about their challenges.  Focus on setting up initial consultations where you have the opportunity to learn what your prospective client needs.  People like to feel heard and they will share openly if you are willing to listen.  When you see a good fit between what they need and what you have to offer, do them a favor and tell them about your services. Always be on the lookout for someone in need and don’t be afraid to
seize the opportunity wherever it presents itself.  Quick Income Challenge: Offer up 10 initial consultations, strategy sessions, discovery sessions, estimates, audits, whatever you call your initial sales conversation. You don’t have to complete each session this week, but do get them all scheduled.

Do these 3 things this week and you’ll boost your income fast.  I’d love to hear your thoughts, please leave your comments below.

Amazing advice Tiffany. One of my biggest goals for 2012 is to increase my speaking engagements and even speak to at least one conference. I’ve had luck reaching out to civic groups that meet each week. They have to find 48+ people to speak each year. Thanks so much for the challenge to focus on these 3 actions each week. Love it.

Thank you, Kristina. You highlight a great point. Many local organizations are really working hard to find speakers–there are so many opportunities to get speaking engagements. I used to be program director for a state chapter of a National Organization and it was so amazing that so few business owners strategically offer speaking as one of their services.

Always on point and excellent advice Tiffany. In fact after reading this post I immediately circled back and sent e-mails to two prospects. Thanks for the reminder. Also, I completely agree that public speaking always leads to work!

Thank you, Linda. I agree–it’s very important to implement and take action. I just saw one of my favorite quotes today: “An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Tiffany – great post – you’re right … ALL of these tips have the potential to increase your income in a big way … as long as they’re done strategically. Speaking alone usually won’t do it, but speaking and selling, or speaking and inviting people to join your list, or speaking and offering a gift, etc. will produce a result every time.

Absolutely, Jennifer. I always tell my clients that they have to have a strategy (and a system) for everything they do in their business–from how to handle emails to income-genereating activities like speaking. Without a strategy, you’re just wasting time. All the elements in your business have to work together cohesively and that doesn’t happen by chance.
