What Will Be Your Legacy?

I love when August rolls around—it really gets me fired up!  Not only because my birthday is August 1st (Yes, I’m a fearless and fiery Leo Dragon!), but because August is “What Will Be Your Legacy Month.”  It’s a great time to take a look at where you are in your business and your personal life and see if you’re on the right track.  What you are doing right now, at this very moment, is the groundwork for building a long-lasting legacy.  Only you can determine what that legacy will be.

Are you living up to your potential?  Are you living life to the fullest?  Are you making a difference in the lives of others?  Are you positively impacting the world? Are you enjoying the people and things that matter most to you?  Are you living in integrity with your dreams, goals, and values? Are you living with, clarity, purpose, and  intention.  Are you happy?  If you answered “yes” to these questions, CONGRATULATIONS!  You are destined to leave a legacy of greatness!

Many of us may not be able to answer “yes” to all of these questions, and that’s ok.  As long as you are consistently taking actions that are in alignment with your vision, you have the ability to craft your legacy, as you wish.

Here are 5 keys you must know to building your own great legacy:

  1. Know who you are.  At your very core, who are you?  What do you stand for? What are you passionate about?  Who do you love? What do you love?  What are your GIFTS?
  2. Know what you want.  Imagine waving a magic wand and everything is exactly the way you wish it to be… what are the first 5 things you notice are different?  This is a glimpse at what you really want.
  3. Know how to make the most of your time.  Time is a finite resource.  Are you spending it wisely?  Do you engage in activities that get you closer to your goals?  Are you  a “go getter” or  a “maybe later” kind of person.  Are you efficient and effective?  Time won’t wait on you to get your “stuff” together.
  4. Know no excuses.  Erase these phrases from your vocabulary.
    1. “I can’t do that” –it isn’t true, it’s just fear talking.
    2. “I don’t know how to do that”—you can learn how to do it or get some help.
    3. “I’ll do that later”—clearly define “later” and put it on your calendar.
    4. “I’ll try to do that”—as Yoda says, “Do or do not. There is no try.”
    5. “I don’t have the money to do that”—if it is important to you, you will find or save the money.
    6. “I don’t have time to do that”—if it is important to you, you will find or make the time.
    7. “I’m not ready yet” or “It’s not the right time”—you are as ready as you’ll ever be.  There never is a perfect time to do anything.  No one is ever totally ready to step into greatness.  If you ever feel completely comfortable, you’re not pushing yourself to grow.
  5. Know when and where to get help.  No one in the history of mankind has ever built a great legacy completely alone.  Get support from friends and family.  Grow your network of colleagues and build strong relationships.  Build a world class team to help you focus on your GIFTS.  Hire a coach or mentor to help you accelerate your success and keep you on the path to building your legacy.

Your legacy is too important to let anything get in the way–build it with intention and integrity!

I’d love hear how you are building your own great legacy!  To your seamless and everlasting success!

Tiffany,

What a great post. As a matter of record – based on your topic – I had blocked today for some “Jeff time.” I spent 4 hours this morning wading and fly-fishing in the South Holston River. I came home and went on a 12 mile bike ride. When I got out of bed this morning, it was tempting to find things to do around the office. But thankfully my voice kicked in and spoke to me of how I needed this time.

My confession: I really do need to be more intentional with number 5!

And … my Dad’s birthday was August 1st. I also have a niece who turn 35 on 8/1 – she was not supposed to live past 2.

Thanks again,
Jeff

I love those 5 keys, Tiffany–great post! So many people get caught up in the excuses–those mindset limitations that can absolutely block your legacy. Thanks for these reminders about what is most important.

Jeff, I’m glad you’ve been getting in some “me” time. Wow, that’s interesting your father and niece are both born on August 1st. I just turned 35, too! No wonder your niece proved the doctors wrong–she’s also a fearless and fiery Leo Dragon.. We never give up. ;-)

Thanks, Linda. Yes, sometimes we can talk ourselves out of our “greatness.”

Love your post Tiffany!! “Legacy”…it’s such a powerful word that alone, sets a great intention. I use this with my clients and it’s most often a word they have not considered for themselves. It is immediately transforming and changes their mindset to much greater possibilities::)) Love #5 – No Excuses. Fabulous!!

Love the post, Tiffany. I’m printing it out and taking it with me to the mountains this weekend so I can sit and answer those questions. I am really fired up about determining my own legacy and living it right now. Thanks for the inspiration.

Wonderful post Tiffany – it is right up the alley of my purpose in life and business “Live your legacy”
I particularly liked “No one in the history of mankind has ever built a great legacy completely alone.” I know in my own life if I can achieve a goal all on my own then I am not playing a big enough game!
And happy birthday to you fellow LEO (I’m the 8th) hear us roar!

You and I both have written lately about no excuses. I love the specific excuses you list and your “fixes” to each of them. It’s funny that for most of my life I’ve just worked, never thinking about the legacy I have left. But now I am old enough that I begin to see the effects of my work even down to the next generation and I have to say, it’s an amazing thing to see.
